Solid hardwood is one piece of wood top to bottom and can be sanded and refinished many times over its life. Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer bonded over an engineered core, which lets it handle concrete subfloors and radiant heat that solid wood can't. Laminate is a photographic wear layer over an HDF core, rated by wear class (AC3 to AC5) rather than species. Vinyl, SPC or WPC rigid core, or flexible LVP/LVT, is the only one of the four with a genuinely waterproof core, which is why it's what we point people toward for kitchens, basements and bathrooms.
Anything with a waterproof core, which rules out laminate and solid hardwood at a sink or dishwasher. An HDF core in laminate swells at the seams the first time water sits on it, and solid wood cups and gaps with humidity swings. SPC rigid-core vinyl and porcelain tile are both waterproof through the material, which is why they're what we install in kitchens.
Yes, with the right product. Solid hardwood is a poor choice below grade, since concrete holds moisture that will warp it over time. Engineered hardwood, SPC vinyl and porcelain tile are all rated for below-grade installation and won't react to a damp subfloor the same way.
